Dove stood in what seemed to have once been a circular area where parades often passed through. Now the place was empty and if one looked closely you could see blood on the once beautiful stone from where innocents and some non-innoncents were slain. Closing her eyes Dove could imagine the old days where young children of both species stood and pointed at the parade marchers with a happy shine in their eyes, their hands covered in assorted treats from stands. Where even royalty was treated as equality as the simple celebration brought everyone together.

Opening her eyes the girl felt like she could hear the ghost of past laughter echo around her causing Dove to cross her arms against her chest. Giving a solemn smile she turned to the only other person there. "I figured the parade grounds would be a good place to start. It's usually deserted here unless an excution is going on. There have been a lot of those going on lately..." She walked around silently, studiyng their surroundings. Memories began to bubble up in her mind and she bit her lip to try and stop herself from thinking about them. Looking over to Dirk she gave a smile to reassure the Prince that everything was fine. "Shall we get started then?"

When they stepped out of the liquor shop, Dirk and Dove quickly made their way through the Low district and towards the High district. Since he could hardly see where he was going with his hood on, Dirk let the young woman lead him through the labyrinth of purple streets. They walked for a while, and Dove eventually slowed her pace and came to a stop. Dirk stopped next to her. He pushed his hood back on his head a little and took a careful look around.

It didn't take long for him to recognize the place; he had been there countless times since he was born. As the Prince, he had to be parades with the monarchy and the royal family. He remembered that the parades had always seemed boring to him, especially when he was a kid. They were usually rather long and he always got tired of just sitting on the royal float and waving. He always felt like the other kids seemed to have a lot more fun. They got to eat candy, blow horns, dance in the confetti...

He still associated these memories to happier times, though. The parade grounds used to always feel... cheerful, for some reason. Now they looked plain sinister. It was probably just an impression, however, because the place had hardly changed since the Condesce took over, except that it was usually deserted . Maybe it seemed that grim to him because he knew what had happened here. This is where the King and many others had been assassinated in cold blood. This is also where the people of Derse had been subjugated to an usurper, and where their hopes had been crushed.

A shiver ran down his spine. He didn't like this place. He glanced at Dove, who seemed to be deep in thoughts. She smiled to him and he grinned back at her.

"Yes, this is a good place to start. Let's get to work. I'd rather get done with this place as soon as possible."

He grabbed her wrist lightly.

"Let's go sit somewhere... We'll have to move eventually, but we can sketch out this area first."

He walked over to a bench at the foot of a building, dragging Dove behind him. He sat down and put his bag down on the ground, opening it. He took out his sketchbook and a charcoal crayon. He opened his book at a blank page and scribbled down "High district" as well as "Parade grounds" at the top of the page.

It seemed that Dirk was uneasy here but Dove didn't expect any less. As the Prince grabbed her wrist and led her over to a bench the blonde girl looked down at his hand. He could definitely crush or at least injure someone of her size but instead his grasp on her wrist was light. If they did ever manage to win this war Dove assumed Dirk would make an amazing ruler. He had the power and tactics of a strong leader but also the morals of a 'good' person. Blinking she noticed Dirk had sat down on a bench and had let go of her wrist to begin writing something down. She probably looked so weird just standing there staring at her wrist.

Pretending as if that never happened Dove sat down next to him and pulled out her own sketch book. Leaning over she snagged a pencil from Dirks bag and began to make her own map of the area. She had to admit she was not the best at directions but she did know what to do when drawing a map. Momentarily looking over at Dirk Dove adopted her usual impassive face. While the memories of this place often brought her a decent amount of joy they probably tormented the boy. Looking over to the 'street' Dove tried to imagine herself in Dirks shoes.

Sure the initial waving to such happy Dersites and carapaces would be interesting but eventually that novelty would wear off, especially for a child. Instead they'd be left staring longingly at the other children who enjoyed treats and toys while they were stuck to that chair forever an 'icon.' For a moment Dove wished that parades still went on just so she could drag Dirk around and show him the best places to see the parade and let him enjoy it from her point of view. Suddenly Dove felt a stab of pity for Dirk- not the troll kind, that would just be awkward, but the actual human definition of it. Staring back down at her own sheet her voice came out almost like a whisper. "I'm sorry for bringing you here."

After leaving the Royal Boy, Roxy headed north, gradually making her way towards the higher districts. As she walked, she noticed the streets were livelier than what she had witnessed the day before. Here and there, carapaces were attending their daily chores and going around with relatively happy faces. Even with what Sollux had explained to her, it was hard for Roxy to fully grasp the fact Derse was ruled by an evil tyrant. But as she passed by the citizens of Derse, the young women started to notice a few details that corroborated what the troll had told her. Most carapaces she passed were walking briskly and staring right in front of them, avoiding to directly look at other passers-by. Some houses were in poor condition and had obviously suffered of some sort of riots.

By the time she got to the high district, she started to see trolls walking around. They were really different from Sollux; they had fins and they looked quite menacing. Roxy tried to remember what her friend had told her about sea dwellers... all she could remember was that they were bad news. She also noticed that carapaces were doing their best to avoid crossing path with the aquatic trolls. Roxy was not really afraid of them but she decided to follow the other carapaces; it was a better idea to blend in.

Roxy had spotted the chain about an hour ago and she followed it. Even if she had never been on Derse’s moon, she still knew that the chain was connected to it and that shuttles could take you to the palace.

The blonde came out of an alley that led to the parade grounds. She glanced up at the chain and a smile spread on her face, though it wasn’t noticeable under her mask. She was almost there. As she was crossing the wide, empty area, she didn’t notice the two lonely figures sitting on a bench. She only noticed how deserted the parade grounds were and she felt a shiver go down her spine; the place was sure creepy, even if she couldn’t find the reason why. She stopped for a moment, looking around with some sort of morbid curiosity. She saw some blood stains on the purple bricks and she felt her stomach churn. What kind of atrocities was happening on Derse? She resumed her walk towards the chain, eager to board one the shuttles.

As Dove sat next to him, Dirk started sketching out his map of the area, frowning with concentration. His head was a lot better, thanks to Dove's charm, and he quickly got absorbed in his work, the way he usually did. It felt good being able to focus on a task again, but then again, it felt more natural than actually good. The Prince didn't really notice his head was better, the same way you usually don't notice when you start feeling better after being sick for a few days; it just felt like he was back in his usual state.

When he was concentrating on something, Dirk usually ended up with a lesser perception of his surroundings, like he could only focus on his task. Thus, he didn't notice that Dove was looking at him until she spoke, and he was lucky he even heard her, as her voice was just a whisper. He raised his head and looked at her, cocked an eyebrow at what she said, not perceiving the hint of pity in her voice. She looked a bit upset, for some reason; she was staring down at her sheet.

"Why would you say that? We had to start somewhere..." He said, confused.

From the corner of his eye, Dirk saw something that caught his attention; there was a black shape coming out of an alleyway and into the parade grounds. He turned his head towards what looked like an oddly shaped, and strangely familiar carapace. He looked at it for a couple of seconds, trying to figure out where he had seen it before. His book and pencil still in his hand, he stood up as the carapace stopped to look around. It came back to him; he couldn't be sure from that distance, but that carapace looked a lot like the one he had met the previous night... which had turned out to be a girl in disguise.

"Dove... I think I met that girl last night."

After a few seconds, the carapace kept walking in the direction of the chain... She couldn't possibly be going there, though, could she? He didn't know what was her deal, but he was pretty sure that someone like her didn't have her place on the moon. He then remembered how lost she had seemed, the previous night, and a thought occurred to him: maybe she didn't know where she was going.

"Where do you think she's going? She can't possibly be going to the moon, can she?" He hesitated for a few seconds before speaking again: "Come on, let's follow her."

He grabbed his bag, slung it over his shoulder, and strode in the direction of the strange carapace.

Before Dove could answer Dirk she too noticed the carapace- or at least something resembling the chess like 'people'. Looking over to Dirk the blonde noticed; for lack of a better word, that the prince was entranced at the sight. He spoke and the words he said made Dove blink in surprise. He had met this carapace before? Not only that but it had been the night he had gotten a mild case of amnesia. Turning back to look at the carapace in question Dove saw that 'she' had begun to walk over to the chain.

Dove joined Dirk in standing up and as she gathered her books Dirk slung his bag over his shoulder. The duo began to follow the odd carapace while Dove adjusted the books in her arms. "Should we make the first move or just follow her?" In truth Dove just wanted to follow due to her shyness around new people. She hated to admit that so she took the course that would defend her pride along with making a logical point.

Keeping an eye on their surroundings Dove listened for any other noises. Dirks feet weren't the most graceful thing to be heard, but at the same time they were not the most clumsy. The carapace in front of them also made noise but hers were much more distinct and quicker- a man on a mission. Doves own made no sound as if she was merely floating inches above the ground, but that would be preposterous. She had just managed to perfect the art of silence long ago.

Dove spoke once more but in a quieter tone this time, "Do you remember anything else about yesterday night now?" She asked Dirk momentarily looking over to the prince.

PostSubject: Re: Map Making   Map Making EmptyTue Jun 05, 2012 11:50 pm

Roxy’s pace gradually sped up, matching her eagerness. She followed a few streets, keeping an eye on the chain you could see over the buildings’ roofs. She turned left in a street that led her to a wide, open area. The rogue abruptly stopped.

There it was: the purple chain linking Derse to its moon. Roxy’s gaze slowly followed the chain and finally fell on the moon. A mix of pride and curiosity started to burn inside of her chest. Pride for what, she didn’t knew. The moon was just so grandiose and she felt a deep connection with it. From where she was standing, she had no way to see the Palace since it was located exactly halfway on the other side of the moon. But she assumed seeing it would be twice as thrilling as it was to finally see the moon from such a small distance. It was weird to realise that all the times she was on Derse with her guardian, never she had been this close to the moon.

Roxy shook her head, waking up from her reverie. Now wasn’t the time to for daydreaming! If Sollux was right, her adventure had just begun and she would have to face great dangers on the moon. As if pushed by some instincts, she quickly looked back. There was no one to see, the street from where she just came was empty. Weird. She had that feeling, just now, that someone was watching her. Maybe her friend’s paranoia had just begun to rub off on her.

The blonde shrugged and took a few steps forward. She examined her surroundings more carefully, noticing that some carapaces were waiting in line to board the next shuttle. After a moment, it was clear that the line was already moving and the shuttle was quickly being filled to its full capacity. Only a few carapaces were left to board and there was no doubt that the shuttle would depart once the line was clear.

Roxy let out a low gasp, shifted her weight and sprinted towards the line. It wasn’t a really carapacian way to move; carapaces could run, of course, but her running position was typically human. In fact, Roxy could have blown her cover just by acting like this.

An agent was standing next to the shuttle’s door, making sure no troublemaker was headed to the moon. He was about to shut the door when Roxy quickly squeezed in, bumping him accidently. The carapace swore and yelled at her, ordering her to be more careful or else he would “hand her ass to the Dignitary!!!!” The threat somewhat reached Roxy but she was already making her way through the crowd, finding a spot at the back of the shuttle. She leaned against one of the walls, trying to calm her heart which was painfully racing inside her chest. It wasn’t because of the running but because of the cold fear that shot through her body upon hearing the name “the Dignitary”. The name itself was pretty harmless but the reactions it caused in the crowd spoke for the character: the chatters suddenly stopped, a female carapace let out a terrified cry and a few carapaces exchanged nervous looks. The air itself was filled with fear.

As the shuttle slowly rose from the ground and followed his route to the moon, the carapaces surrounding Roxy quickly moved away from her as if she was the dreaded Dignitary. Nonetheless, a satisfied grin spread on her face; she was headed for the moon, now no one could stop her. Or so she thought.

Dirk blinked at Dove's question, uncertain of his own intentions. At first, he only intended to follow her in order to make sure she wasn't actually heading for the chain... to make sure she was safe. However, he was slightly curious about the events of the previous night... And if someone could enlighten him about it, it was probably the figure of the carapace that was walking away ahead of them. Talking to her might be the only way to get answers to his questions... but he had this funny feeling that he might not like what he would find out. Part of him wanted to catch up with the girl, another told him he should bolt off in the opposite direction.

He wasn't one to make a decision based only on intuitions, though, and the safety of the girl was at stake, he was sure of it, so he couldn't just take off. He decided it was probably best to just follow her from a distance.

"Let's just follow her for now... We'll see when she gets to the chain. I mean if she gets to the chain."

He kept his eyes fixed on the back of the cloaked girl ahead of them, following the same streets she followed. Dove and he quickly had to quicken their pace to match Roxy's. Dirk looked down at Dove when she spoke. He blinked slowly, thinking of a suitable answer. He didn't want to tell her about the strange feeling he had. It wasn't exactly relevant and, after all, it was merely an intuition. For all he knew, it didn't even mean anything. Besides, that could hardly be called "remembering something", so he just shrugged and grinned at her.

"No, not really."

Dove's question distracted him from the carapace they were following, so he didn't slow his pace instantly when she stopped. As soon as he noticed she wasn't moving anymore, he ducked behind a few stacked crates disposed next to the wall of violet bricks. He felt a bit silly, acting this way. Did it really matter if she saw them? It's not like they were spying on her. Still, he remained behind the crates and peeked at the carapace as she dreamingly looked at her surroundings. He vaguely wondered why she was taking so long, but the thought was quickly brushed off as the carapace dashed towards the shuttle, and his heart skipped a beat.

"Dove, she's getting away!" he shouted as he took off towards the corner of the street.
He arrived to the open area just in time to see the shuttle slowly rising from the ground. He glanced up at the passengers and spotted the girl among them. There was no doubt about it anymore, she was definitely headed for the Moon. He turned to Dove, distraught.

"We should wait for the next shuttle."

Once more Dove received a smile from Dirk and she couldn't help but wonder how he managed to put on such a happy face. Instead of asking she just continued to walk along side him. Soon the 'carapace' had stopped causing Dirk to dive behind some crates. The dersite girl turned her head to stare at the prince hiding and blinked a couple of times. "Having fun?" She asked with a smile trying to inch its way onto her face. Before she could hear an answer Dirk had took off and turning back to the 'carapace' Dove could see why.

She took off running just behind the boy silently cursing her dresses slim figure making it difficult to move fast. She'd have to figure out what to do about that later but for now she focused on trying to keep up with Dirk. When they had finally arrived at the chain the shuttle had left, taking whoever they were after with it. "Well unless you have a magical Pegasus to give us a ride I don't see any other way except waiting."

Dove looked up towards the with her gray eyes as she took a couple of deep breaths after their quick sprint. "I can't remember the last time I went to the Moon...Was it nice when you were there?" She asked turning to look at Dirk.

Dove's question of the moon had broken Dirk from his concentrated gaze on the shuttle. He turned to her as the hint of nostalgia was plain on his face, "It was home... " he started softly, "the view of the planet from my tower was amazing... you could see everything... but all that's gone now... But not for long." Dirk nodded his head affirmatively, more for himself than for Dove. He wanted the Derse he knew, to come back. He needed to strike down the tyrants who overthrew the government before.... but that was a fair ways off, at least not today.

"Anyway, the next shuttle comes in 20 minutes. Hopefully no one notices me."

Dirk froze suddenly, standing rigid. He heard running footsteps coming toward them and someone within the crowd shouting, "It's the prince! There he is! Get him!" He turned to see 2 black carapaces in authority regulator uniforms running towards them.

"We really don't have time for this...." the prince sighed as he pulled up his hood. It had fallen down while running up to the chain. He turned to Dove quickly, "Up for a run?"

"You'll get it back someday..." Dove said as Dirk reminisced about the past. Lifting a hand up she let it hover over Dirk's shoulder for a second before letting it fall and lightly squeeze his shoulder in comfort. The Dersite also looked off towards the Moon in her own thoughts before she felt Dirk go stiff. Turning to him she watched as the Prince pulled his hood up as Dove heard people shouting in the background.

"I'm not looking to get caught that easy so a run sounds perfect. But first..."

Dove turned to the two carapaces before mumbling a few words in their direction followed by a flick of the hand. The two beings stopped suddenly as if they were windup toys and their turner had just ended. "Let's hurry, I didn't have enough time to make that spell stronger." The Dersite girl took off running and growled to herself at just how difficult her dress was being in this situation. Once we stop I am going to do something about this dress or so help me... She thought to herself before looking over to Dirk.

Adrenaline was pumping hard through Dirk's veins. He almost started running without Dove but stopped when he heard the crowd gasp. He turned to see the two carapatian authority regulators frozen in their tracks. He was stunned himself for a half second, brought back to reality as Dove started running past him. "Sounds like a plan!", he said as he grabbed her hand and started pushing past carapace citizens that had formed a small crowd around the scene.

Once past the stunned pawns, Dirk let Dove running down the street then down the nearest alley. "Hold on." he said as he stopped abruptly and pulled up his hood, worried that even though no one was in the alley that someone might see him. He pulled his knife out of his boot. "Forgive me." Dirk swiftly cut down the fabric on the side of Dove's dress from the hip down and returned his knife to his boot as fast as he had pulled it out. "That should help." Dirk thought about how they had a time limit to catch the next shuttle as they continued running, sure the authority regulators wouldn't be far behind them after that short pause.

"We only have about 12 minutes to lose these guys and get back to the shuttle. And now we gotta figure out a way to keep me from being seen..."

Dove followed Dirk's lead as he pulled her through citizens, down the street and then into an alley. Dirk began speaking and before Dove could get a word out Dirk had cut a slit from the hip down in the left side of her dress. "No need to apologize, I had the same idea myself." She said as Dirk put on his hood and spoke once more causing the dersite girl to let out a quiet gasp. "You're a genius Dirk. I'll just turn us invisible. I have to warn you though that even though no one can see us doesn't mean we're not there. So try not to bump into anybody, and if you do don't say anything.

Looking outside of the alleyway momentarily Dove couldn't see any running carapaces yet but she knew they'd appear soon. Turning back to Dirk the girl held out her hand. "It's easier to make us both invisible if we're connected physically somehow. It works if we're connected mentally too but it's much harder to keep that one going." Dove explained as she began whispering once more as her body slowly disappearing.

Dirk saw the hand extended to him. "Understood." said Dirk upon taking in the concept of enhancing the psychic connection with physical touch, he promptly removed his glove and hastily shoved it in his pocket before taking Dove's hand. Dirk felt a tingling sensation come over his body while Dove spoke an incantation under subdued breath. He in mild astonishment as Dove's body started to disappear, slowly followed by his own. Dirk let out a quiet, "Wow!" as he examined his invisible hand. "You're more familiar with being invisible I'd assume. Should we go and lay quiet and wait for the shuttle or shall we hide?"
